The Dean of the Doctoral School of Literature, Humanities, and Social Sciences announces that applications are now being accepted from students who have completed a research-based master鈥檚 degree and wish to pursue a Lebanese doctoral degree for the academic year 2024鈥�2025 from the following faculties and institutes:

• Faculty of Letters & Human Sciences
• Faculty of Pedagogy
• Institute of Social Sciences
• Faculty of Information
• Faculty of Fine Arts & Architecture

Student applications should be submitted in hard copy to the IT Department from Thursday, 7 March through Friday, 22 March 2024, during official working hours.

Documents Required

1. Copy of ID or civil status record

2. (2) Two passport photos, certified in accordance with officially applicable procedures and regulations

3. Certified copy of the Lebanese General Secondary School Diploma or its officially recognized equivalent

4. Certified copy of the bachelor鈥檚 degree or its equivalent, verifying the courses and grades earned by the student during their undergraduate studies

5. Certified copy of the research-based master鈥檚 degree or its equivalent, with a cumulative GPA of 14/20 (70/100, 鈥淕ood鈥�), verifying the courses and grades earned by the student during their graduate studies

6. Electronic copy (CD) of the research-based master鈥檚 thesis

7. Any student holding a postgraduate or advanced studies diploma (old system) or a research-based master鈥檚 degree from a university other than the 91吃瓜网 should have their degree equivalenced by the Equivalency Committee at the Ministry of Education & Higher Education in Lebanon

8. Course descriptions for students holding degrees from institutions other than the 91吃瓜网

9. Printed CV of the candidate, accompanied by the required documents and statements mentioned above

First Stage: Closed Written Exam (20 points):

The written exam consists of a single question focused on the candidate鈥檚 field of specialization and lasts two hours. It will be held at the doctoral school in the conference hall on Monday, 29 April 2024, at 10:00 am.

Students who score at least 15/20 points will advance to the second stage.

• Students who have successfully passed the first stage should submit their research proposal to the relevant research group. The proposal should fall within the scope of the research topics specified by the research group and published on the school's website. Proposals that present new and noteworthy ideas outside the specified research topics will also be considered, as well as research projects related to the development of fields within the school's areas of specialization or fields that intersect with them.
• The research proposal should be signed by a supervising professor who meets the school's supervision requirements.
• A supervising professor may not approve more than two doctoral projects.
• The maximum length of the research proposal is 12 pages (3,000 words) (5 hard copies of the proposal and one electronic copy).
• The school is under no administrative or academic obligation toward a student who has passed the written exam but has been unable to find a supervisor for their research project.
• Announcement of the list of students accepted to proceed to the second stage; they should submit their research proposal within two months of the date the results are announced.

Second Stage: Evaluation of the student鈥檚 thesis proposal prior to its defense (30 points)

The student鈥檚 thesis proposal is forwarded to two reviewers for evaluation. They may be members of the research group or from outside it (depending on necessity or expertise).

This submission is made via email and in hard copy, without the names of the student or the supervising professor, and is accompanied by the evaluation form.

The two reviewers return the form to the research group chair via email or by hand, along with the student鈥檚 score on the proposal and, if applicable, a justification for rejecting the proposal.

Proposal Evaluation Criteria

Students who score at least 25/30 points advance to the second stage

Announcement of the list of students eligible to proceed to the third stage

Third Stage: Oral Interview and Research Project Discussion (50 points)

1. An oral interview with the student conducted by the specialized research team (15 points)

The interview takes place concurrently with the thesis proposal defense, in the presence of the research team leader or his/her designee, and with the approval of the dean of the school.

b. Thesis Proposal Defense (35 points)

The discussion takes place in the presence of the research committee chair or his/her designee and the reviewers, one of whom should be a member of the research committee who has reviewed the research proposal and provided comments, and with the written approval of the dean of the school.

Criteria for the Doctoral Thesis Proposal Discussion

A student passes the third stage if their total score on the oral interview and research proposal is 40/50.

A student is eligible for admission to the doctoral program if they have earned a minimum total score of 80/100 across the three stages.

Note:

1. Non-Lebanese students may submit their doctoral applications electronically by sending their application materials to the following email address (edls@ul.edu.lb). They should also comply with the deadline for taking the written exam in person at the school, which is officially set for 29 April 2024.

2. If the number of students who have earned 80 points exceeds the school's capacity (the total number set by the University Council is 90 students, plus 10 non-Lebanese students), students with the highest overall scores will be admitted, in accordance with the priorities of the specializations that meet the needs of the university and the job market, as well as the school's capacity.

The results issued by the Academic Council are final, and the names of admitted students will be published on the school's website. Admitted students should complete registration procedures at the start of the academic year 2024-2025.
